Infección bacteriana aguda del intestino, caracterizada por diarrea, dolor abdominal y fiebre, que se transmite mediante el contacto mano a boca por las heces de individuos infectados con bacterias de una especie patógena del género Shigella. Estos organismos pueden ser transportados por las heces de personas asintomáticas durante varios meses, siendo posible su diseminación a través de objetos contaminados, alimentos o moscas, especialmente en áreas pobres y superpobladas.
